What is Quartz?
As you probably already know, quartz is not a natural stone. It is what we call engineered stone. Quartz slabs used for countertops are manufactured from quartz crystals bound together with a special resin. The result is beautiful and extremely strong and durable material. The technology of making quartz was developed in Italy in the 1960s. It involves a mixture of 90% pulverized natural quartz with 10% of synthetic polymers. The blend is then heated and shaped into slabs.
The appearance of quartz countertops depends on how finely the quartz crystals are ground. For example, coarsely ground crystals will produce textured, speckled designs. Whereas finely ground crystals will give quartz a smoother look.
